Zulutrade Hidden Gem (2): How to Protect Your GBP/JPY Portfolio

Markets hardly ever trade in the same trading range for long. There are general trends that may unfold for weeks, months and years.

On top of that, there is always considerable price fluctuation during uncertain periods – sometimes leading to significant volatility.

Interestingly, the volatility could be both good or bad depending on which side you're on.

For example, it can boost your account significantly or easily wipe you off, just like that (see figures below) when dealing with the scary volatile market of GBP/JPY.

Before the meltdown, the above two systems (4xMarketTrackers and CurrencyForce) used to have a 100% win record. Eventually, the market/volatility finally caught up with them.

These systems used a fixed 500-pip wide stop but still couldn't escape from their fate ! The GBP/JPY fell more than 1000 pips in less than 72 trading hours in mid March !

I still have confidence in these GBP/JPY signal providers. But it is up to us to protect ourselves in the most unexpected circumstances.

Here are some precaution signs I would use to warn myself about the possible bad trades ahead.

a) Longer than expected trade time. Start checking out the open trades if they are still open after 12 hours.

b) Higher-than-normal standard deviation (StdDev) reading. Note that the StdDev is a measure of price volatility. When the StdDev indicator shows a reading of more than 0.9 (on M30 metatrader chart), reduce the number of open trades in the next 36 hours.

Zulutrade Hidden Gem: It's Not Perfect Unless It's (Almost) 100%

One of the Main Goals of this forex blog is to research plus review various possible ways/ resources that might help readers (including myself) to trade profitably in the forex market.

They could be of any trading approaches, such as Momentum Trading, Breakout Trading, News Trading, Day Trading, Fast Scalping, Signal Software Trading, Expert Advisor Trading, Signal Provider System, Short-Term Trading, Long-Term Trading, and etc.

In general, I told most of my information/stories based on my own encounter and knowledge. Or even better sometimes, I discover something thru third parties (e.g. blog readers, software developers and sellers, etc) encounter. I can assure you that the learning process and benefits are MUTUAL.

New Forex Auto-Trading Tip on Zulutrade

I just learned this from my blog reader (indirectly) over a short two-week time period, and he/she is one of my referred Zulutrade user. (He/she must have read my previous posts on Zulutrade Signal Providers). I can assure you that the current 'hottest' Zulutrade's Signal Providers are not what you normally see on the front performance page - which I called it the revamped Zulutrade Performance Leaderboard.

What I am about to introduce to you is the "Most Users Performance LeaderBoard" (see figure below) which includes signal providers which open and holding many lots at one time. After examining their track records, I can again assure you that they are REAL Money Makers for any Zulutrade Account Holder who has already subscribed to them. For this reader of mine mentioned previously, he/she uses them effectively (i.e. started with a large bankroll) and has since powered up his/her FULL-SIZE trading account by +70% in less than 2-week time !

A System Isn't Pefect Unless It's (Almost) 100% ?!

For you who have not heard of Zulutrade before, I would recommend you to open several 30-day free Demo Accounts to run the following BIG 5 SIGNAL PROVIDERS separately: 4x World, 4xMarketTrackers, CurrencyForce, The Forex Club, fx-millionaire, and also CHF/JPY-Mover. The first four are from a team of forex specialists dealing with the GBP/JPY market only. Do your due diligence before investing for real.

The systems as mentioned earlier share a resemblance with the ForexAutoPilot EA (mentioned in these previous posts) which are specifically designed to AIM for a 100% win record.

I might as well try to develop similar systems / EAs to emulate this trading concept, but need to beware of the potential system drawdown.

Revamp of the Leaderboard on Zulutrade (2)

It has been 3 weeks since Zulutrade introduced its new ranking system to promote good performance and feasible trading strategies. Below are the current top 10 signal providers on Zulutrade. Long gone are the high risk systems such as fx-millionaire, nirvana forex, malibutfx and etc.

Top of the class is Tecnofinanzas, a forex strategist from Spain. Basically, the system uses time-based trade entries and exits. For example, trades are running from 8 am prompt (UK time) to 12 noon for one session. Then, trades are usually reversed in the other direction at 12 pm and closed at 8pm no matter what outcome. An easy-to-follow strategy and with surprisingly good results at time.

The other two systems that I like are Kante and Trader FX.

Revamp of the Leaderboard on Zulutrade (1)

During the last month of live testing, I found out that many systems on the Zulutrade are basically unsustainable and unrealistic, due to the fact that the margin level which imposed on a subscriber account is simply too high (even for a large account size) as a result of opening many trade positions by the same signal provider at any given time. The problem is exacerbated further when the account is in the drawdown mode.

Finally, Zulutrade has taken its step in correcting the situation:
Most forex sites that track systems performance will show you the best performing systems near the top. But usually this does not take into account how feasible this performance is in reality. For example, when a system opens more and more trades without first closing the previous ones, your account needs to have a lot of available margin (funds) to be able to open the new positions as they come.

But in reality, your account might be unable to open many positions at the same time due to margin requirements.

Our proprietary ZuluRank system takes this into consideration, together with many other factors like maturity (how long a system has been running for), exposure (how many positions might be open at the same time) and drawdown (how many ups and downs the system has experienced) in order to provide you with an easy way of viewing the systems that are good performers and feasible trading strategies.

The new leaderboard actually confirms my watchlist and top picks all this long. Coming soon, I will be concentrating my efforts on evaluating these new system performers.

Limit Your Trading Losses on fx-millionaire (2)

On 24th October, I did my my first review on fx-millionaire of Zulutrade and I wrote:
On its proven track record and given the extreme price volatility of this currency pair, I would assume that a position would be beyond repair only if with a drawdown of over 300+ pips.
Since then, 3 trades have been completed (as I only allowed one trade at a time).

1st trade drawdown -278 (less than 300 pips) = Win +87 pips
2nd trade drawndow -490 (more than 300 pips) = Lose -486 pips
3rd trade drawdown - 326 (more than 300 pips) = Lose -243 pips

I am 100% right on my analysis. So, set your stop wisely.

Meanwhile, there are some serious shake out in the leader board. Unfortunately, Nirvana has fallen from its grace. No matter how good is your entry system, you still need a exit strategy to protect your capital. Always expect the unexpected.

fx-millionaire on Zulutrade (1)

fx-millionaire is a short-term trading system that trades exclusively the GBP/JPY cross.

With a win-rate of 97% over 1000 trades, I am certainly impressed. However, subscribers should expect and be warned against big drawdown (occasionally) using this auto-trading system.

My first demo trade is currently one of 'it' with a -223 pips drawdown (still open).

The last time we saw this magnitude of drawdown (-241) is about 2 weeks ago. The system managed to salvage the position for 8 pips.

The system had similar drawdowns (-231) & (-318) about 5 and 6 weeks ago and it still salvaged 33 pips and 36 pips.

The monster of all drawdowns was the following unusual trade which eventually lost almost 700 pips.

On its proven track record and given the extreme price volatility of this currency pair, I would assume that a position would be beyond repair only if with a drawndown of over 300+ pips.

And hence, I am expecting my current demo trade to be a profitable one. Prove me wrong?

'Nirvana Forex' in Trouble

'Nirvana Forex' of Zulutrade is currently in trouble by having too many open short yen positions during today's massive carry madness unwinding.

After 1 week of live testing, I managed to guess-estimate its entry strategy, but could not really figure out its exit. Maybe there isn't one. I really don't know.

An exit plan will certainly come in handy during unforeseen circumstances and if you have a limited capital. Preservation of capital is always the key to trading success.

At least, we got something out of it, click here, here and here for some nice looking charts.

MalibutFX, You Are Next

MalibutFX is currently under my radar since fx-millionare appears to be on hiatus at the moment. I think MalibutFX adopts a swing trading approach with positions typically last from 1 - 5 days. All markets appear to be tradable. And most importantly, it takes profits and losses consistently. The one thing I do not understand is that the system decides to accept a larger loss than its projected profit (approximately 2x). Anyhow, the system has a win rate of 66% and I going to subscribe for a real live testing.

How Nirvana Make Pips on Zulutrade (3)

After 1 week of testing, I think, this is how 'Nirvana Forex' system make money in forex trading. I wrote about its trading method here.

And here are the final results of the two examples of trade setup which I illustrated earlier:

Short GBP/USD
Sold 1st lot at 2.0334, Covered 2.0305, Profited 29 pips, Drawdown -49
Sold 2nd lot at 2.0369, Covered 2.0306, Profited 63 pips, Drawdown -13
Total pips: +92.
This was a straight-forward winning setup.

Short EUR/JPY
Sold 1st lot at 165.12, Covered 165.09, Profited 3 pips, Drawdown -137
Sold 2nd lot at 165.12, Covered 165.09, Profited 3 pips, Drawdown -137
Sold 3rd lot at 165.35, Covered 165.05, Profited 30 pips, Drawdown -113
Sold 4th lot at 165.41, Covered 165.04, Profited 37 pips, Drawdown -108
Sold 5th lot at 166.18, Covered 165.46, Profited 72 pips, Drawdown -31
Sold 6th lot at 165.71, Covered 165.31 Profited 40 pips, Drawdown -40
Total pips: +185 pips.
Eventhough the overall drawdown at one one point was -380, still, the 'system' managed to pull it off. Very impressive.

Overall, it is still a high risk strategy and you probably need a fairly large bankroll to maintain your positions as there could be 15 - 20 lots being opened across various markets at one time. If you prefer this type of adventurous style trading, I would suggest $3000 -$5000 for a mini account. Last but not least, let hope for its long lasting 'golden' performance.

Analysing System on Zulutrade (2)

Since I have already been trialling the nirvana forex system, I might as well try to figure out its strategy. We knew that it is a system based on S & R, Fib during the trend following & range periods. But, what support and resistance levels are being used, on which time frame and how many positions will be opened based on one setup?

From what I have observed so far, I might have some clues about the system:
1) The use of 5-min chart
2) The use of 50, 100 and 200 EMAs (hence 1st, 2nd and 3rd sup/res levels)

Below are some examples:
1) Short GBP/USD (yesterday's setup)
The trend was down. Price retraced to 50EMA (blue). Short at 2.0334. Price retraced further above 100 (red) and even 200 EMA (gold). Short again at 2.0369. Finally, the down trend resumed, yielding 29 and 63 pips on each position. The trade paid off!

2) Short EUR/JPY (today's setup)
The trend was down. Price retraced to 100 EMA (red). Short 2 times at 165.13. Price retraced further to 200 EMA (gold). Short the 3rd time at 165.35 and 10 mins later short the 4th time at 165.41. These trades are still open at this point of writing. Current price and drawdown: 165.85 and -250 pips!!!
Updated: Short the fifth time at 166.19. Current drawdown: -380 pips.

I have no ideas about its exit strategy yet.

I will be trialing the most successful system on zulutrade - fx millionaire next.

Live Testing on Zulutrade (1)

I am currently trialling nirvana forex from zulutrade with my mini account. Its return looks pretty amazing on the performance page so far, and its strategy is claimed to be:
...based on S & R, Fib & COT report suitable for both trend following & range periods. The system trades 16 pairs--some exotics with wide spreads. Please be advised to use low leverage & large accounts to withstand drawdowns as the system is based on longer time frames which also helps to generate some fantastic returns

However, I have set some restrictions when using this signal provider as there could be many positions (lots) being opened at one time. At this beginning phase, I am only allowing 1 lot being opened at any one time. I have also increased the take-profit limit from 60 to 80 pips.

Below is the actual results traded via FXCM broker:

No. of trades: 6 (4W, 2L)
Pips so far: +50
P/L: +$43.17
